From 1 to 4 July 2026, members of the SOS-GVC research team took part in the SASE Annual Conference in Bordeaux, France.
The Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE) is an international and interdisciplinary scholarly community bringing together researchers working on the relationship between economic processes, institutions, and society.
At SASE 2026, the SOS-GVC team presented two papers on regional development, entrepreneurial ecosystems, global value chains, and firms’ internationalization dynamics, benefiting from stimulating discussions and valuable exchanges with the international scholarly community:
1) Rewiring Mature Regions: Plug-In Firms, Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, and Subnational Value

2) From Export Exit to Re-Entry: Re-Internationalization and Knowledge Retention in Micro and Small Enterprises

The paper was presented in the session “Upgrading Trajectories in GVCs”, part of the Global Value Chains track and chaired by Christina Teipen.
The study investigates intermittent exporting among micro and small enterprises during the 2008–2015 crisis period. It finds that foreign subcontracting ties and export-oriented local environments support re-entry into foreign markets, while intermittent exporters experience smaller revenue declines than other firms. Overall, stop-and-go internationalization emerges as a potentially adaptive strategy in periods of heightened uncertainty.
